Logan County Court Docket Searches
No single search covers every Logan County court docket. Each court level runs its own system. Circuit Court records live in the West Virginia Public Access Search System, or WVPASS. Magistrate cases are searched through MCRSearch. Traffic and misdemeanor cases often start in Magistrate Court. So do small claims, bail matters, and the first stage of many felony cases. Felony trials, larger civil suits, and appeals belong in Circuit Court. Family Court has its own subject area, though the Circuit Clerk keeps those files.
Start with the court named on your notice. Keep the party name and exact case number close at hand. Punctuation and prefixes matter. If the first system returns no match, check the other court layer. Then call the responsible clerk. A missing result may simply mean the file is older, sealed, or confidential. It could also be filed under another spelling, or held by a different court.
- Read the case notice and identify Circuit, Family, Magistrate, municipal, or federal court.
- Open WVPASS for Circuit records or MCRSearch for Magistrate case information.
- Search with the full case number when possible, or try the party name and alternate spellings.
- Review the case header, docket entries, event schedule, status, and disposition.
- Ask the correct Logan County clerk to confirm a setting or furnish an official copy.
Three Logan County Docket Tools
Three official tools cover Logan County docket work, and each does a different job. WVPASS is the public Circuit Court record layer. After free registration, it opens public Circuit documents dating from 1999. Downloads run 25 cents per page plus a card-processing charge. MCRSearch skips registration and returns up to 30 Magistrate case-information results. It does not supply the documents behind those entries. The Magistrate Court Payment System is narrower still. It takes an exact citation, case, or payment-plan ID and finds the payment path.
| Tool | Best Use | Main Limit |
|---|---|---|
| WVPASS | Public Circuit case records and documents | No juvenile or sealed files |
| MCRSearch | Magistrate names, cases, events, and outcomes | No document downloads |
| Payment System | Exact citation or payment lookup | Not a full docket |
The official Court Record Access page lays out the Circuit and Magistrate options side by side.
Court Dockets: What They Show
A Logan County court docket is a chronological register, not a transcript. It names the court and case, and lists the parties. It also records each paper filed, and tracks scheduled events and results. MCRSearch organizes its pages under headings. These include Case Event Schedule, Case Parties, and Docket Entry. WVPASS and CourtPLUS use fields such as court, judge, case type, and style. Other fields cover county, created date, status, security level, and related cases. Always read the description beside a code. The text often gives more useful meaning than the prefix alone.
| Case Number | The unique ID; copy prefixes and dashes exactly, such as the state test format CC-98-2019-F-4. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Names and roles such as plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, or respondent. |
| Docket Entries | Filing date, code, description, and the person or office that filed the item. |
| Hearing Settings | Date, time, room, location, judge, event type, and any closure reason. |
| Court and Judge | The court location and judicial officer tied to that event. |
| Disposition | The recorded outcome, which may differ from an interim status. |
Logan County Docket Codes
Local Magistrate entries can look cryptic until the description is read. A public Logan County case detail shows several real code and description pairs. Treat them as examples, not a full statewide dictionary. A code may identify an event or paper. The adjacent words explain what actually occurred.
- MMFCF
- Misdemeanor Complaint, the charging paper shown in the inspected system.
- MMFSI
- Summons Issued, indicating that formal notice was produced.
- MGSSC
- Service Successful or Complete.
- MGMCT
- Motion to Continue, a request to move a setting.
- MGNCH
- Notice of Hearing.
A motion to continue is a request, not a ruling. It does not prove a new date was granted. Look for a later order or event schedule in the docket, then confirm the current setting with the clerk.
Logan County Courts and Their Dockets
West Virginia runs one judicial system, but Logan County records stay split by court level. The Eleventh Judicial Circuit joins Logan and Mingo counties. Logan Family Court belongs to the Ninth Family Court Circuit. Magistrate Court handles lower-level criminal, traffic, small civil, and preliminary matters. A municipal ordinance matter may stay with a city custodian. That applies where an active municipal court exists. Federal cases go to a separate federal system.
| Court | Docket Covers | Where to Search |
|---|---|---|
| Logan Circuit Court | Felonies, larger civil matters, and lower-court appeals | WVPASS or Circuit Clerk |
| Logan Family Court | Divorce, custody, support, paternity, and related cases | Circuit Clerk, subject to access limits |
| Logan Magistrate Court | Misdemeanors, traffic, small claims, bail, and felony preliminaries | MCRSearch or Magistrate Clerk |
| Municipal Court, if active | Municipal ordinance matters | Municipal custodian |
Logan County Docket Clerk Choices
The most common search mistake is contacting the wrong clerk. Mark McGrew, the Logan County Circuit Clerk, keeps Circuit and Family Court pleadings, orders, dockets, and related case funds. Michelle L. Copley, the Logan County Magistrate Court Clerk, keeps the Magistrate files. The County Clerk of the County Commission handles other county records. That office is not the state-court docket clerk.

Public terminals offer another access channel. The Circuit Clerk lists lobby research hours on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except noon to 1 p.m. Magistrate Clerk offices also have statewide-enabled public terminals. Call before travel, since separate Magistrate hours and local access details are not published.
Court Dates and Settings in Logan County
Check a hearing date in the case event schedule. Do not infer it from the newest filing. MCRSearch can show the event type, date, time, room, location, and judge. It may also give a reason an event was closed. Circuit settings may appear in WVPASS case activity or a filed notice. Neither screen replaces a direct clerk check when a hearing is near or the entries conflict.
A continuance moves a setting by request or by order. The motion alone does not confirm the move. Read the later order and event record. The full Logan County court schedule walkthrough explains each channel and what to do after a missed setting.
Logan County Docket Filing Numbers
The West Virginia Judiciary's final 2024 annual report shows several distinct Logan County workloads. Circuit Court recorded 488 criminal filings and 387 civil filings. The juvenile Circuit total was 178. Family Court separately reported 184 divorces, 271 domestic-violence matters, and 43 other domestic-relations matters. Magistrate civil data included 284 small-claims filings. A total of 780 appeared in the civil and personal-safety table.
Those figures explain why one search tool cannot cover the whole county. They are finalized annual counts, unlike the Judiciary's newer daily dashboard, which warns that its active-case data are preliminary.
Docket Access Under West Virginia Law
Public access starts from the rule that court records are open unless a specific restriction applies. That rule does not make every part of every Logan County file public. Juvenile records, sealed material, sensitive identifiers, and protected victim information can stay outside ordinary public view. Much of a domestic-relations file can too. Domestic-relations orders in the civil order books remain public. Pleadings and exhibits are generally confidential unless access is authorized.
Key Rules:
W. Va. Code §51-4-2 makes court papers open to inspection and requires copies unless another rule restricts access.
W. Va. Code §29B-1-3 sets the reasonably specific public-record request process and response period.
W. Va. Code §49-5-103 keeps juvenile records nonpublic except for authorized disclosures.
Logan County Court Record Copy Costs
Pulling up a Logan County case on a screen is one thing. Getting the actual pages out costs money. WVPASS public downloads run 25 cents per page. A payment-processing charge rides along with it. Magistrate copies also cost 25 cents per page under the administrative rule. Copies made by the Circuit Clerk's office run higher, at $1 per page. Remember that what you see online is not automatically a certified copy. No separate certified-copy surcharge appears in the published fee lists.
| Record Route | Published Charge |
|---|---|
| WVPASS public download | $0.25 per page plus processing |
| Magistrate Clerk photocopy | $0.25 per page |
| Circuit Clerk copy | $1.00 per page |
Call the clerk for a current quote before you send money. That matters most when certification, postage, or a thick file is in play.
How the Clerk Keeps Docket Records
A Logan County Circuit or Family case may live in more than one form. The Circuit Clerk has run CourtPLUS E-File since June 2019. The Vault holds scanned papers inside the court's own digital system. WVPASS puts eligible public records on the outside. Self-represented parties still hand paper to the clerk. Sealed items go the paper route too under the official guidance. Older files may sit as paper, bound volumes, microfilm, or archived material. Online Circuit coverage only reaches back to 1999.
Make a request at the counter. Or use whatever submission method the clerk confirms by phone. The published numbers include fax lines. Logan offers no standard online certified-copy form and no public copy-request email. Put the court, case number, party names, the paper you want, copy type, and date range in writing. Hold off on originals and payment until the clerk confirms the current method.

Logan County Docket Technology Timeline
The electronic trail behind a Logan County court docket has firm dates. CourtPLUS E-File went live for Logan Circuit and Family Courts in June 2019. MCRSearch added statewide public Magistrate case information in January 2024. WVPASS opened public Circuit searching in March 2025, and its eligible public documents reach back to 1999. During 2026, the Judiciary added a daily statistics dashboard and kept building CourtOne, a planned unified case-management system.
That CourtOne plan does not mean Logan County has a replacement public screen today. Stick with WVPASS and MCRSearch until the Judiciary announces and documents a change. The court statistics dashboard also labels its own data preliminary, so annual reports stay the sound source for final filing totals.
The official West Virginia Judiciary page shows the statewide entry point for court information.
That statewide layer ties together public searches, court contacts, rules, closures, and statistics. It does not replace the Logan County clerks who hold the original records.
Special Dockets in Logan County
Logan County runs several named treatment-court programs. The Adult Drug Court started in 2008 and stays active. A Juvenile Drug Court operates under the Circuit Court. The Eleventh Circuit Family Treatment Court serves Logan and Mingo counties together. All of these are structured programs inside the court map, not separate case files. Their public program pages do not open treatment notes. Confidential participant details stay closed to docket view.
When a public Circuit case sits underneath a program, search that case first. Then ask the Circuit Clerk whether a specific order is open. State law keeps juvenile case records confidential. Family treatment matters can carry protected domestic-relations papers as well. Program staff manage the calendars and data. Their administrative files are not a substitute for a public court record.
City-by-City Court Dockets in Logan County
Logan, Chapmanville, Man, West Logan, and Mitchell Heights are the five largest incorporated places in Logan County. The count comes from the 2020 Census incorporated-place table. None of them offers a public municipal docket portal right now. A city address alone does not make a case municipal. State traffic and misdemeanor matters usually land in Logan Magistrate Court, while a local ordinance matter may stay with a municipal court if the city runs one. Each city record page opens with that distinction.
