Logan County Civil Docket Searches
Circuit and Family Court lookups begin on the Judiciary's Court Record Access page. That page leads into WVPASS. Registration for public users costs nothing. The system advertises public Circuit Court civil and criminal records reaching back to 1999. Searching is free. Public document downloads run 25 cents per page plus a small card-processing fee. Keep in mind that a WVPASS image is not a certified clerk copy.
For a Logan County small claim or any other Magistrate civil matter, use MCRSearch. It takes a first name, last name, or case number. It requires CAPTCHA verification, and returns up to 30 records. No document images come through it. The Logan Magistrate Court Clerk handles permitted copies. So gather the party name, court name, filing year, and exact case number first.
- Read the newest notice and identify Circuit, Family, or Magistrate Court.
- Use WVPASS for Circuit or Family records and MCRSearch for Magistrate records.
- Search the exact case number when known, then try a party name and spelling variations.
- Review the case type, status, filings, event schedule, and disposition.
- Contact the responsible clerk for a public document, certification, or date check.
Logan County Civil Docket Lanes
There is no single, undivided Logan County civil docket. Civil records run in separate court lanes. Circuit Court serves as the general-jurisdiction trial court. Family Court hears divorce, annulment, separate maintenance, paternity, custody, visitation, support, name changes, and related domestic matters. Magistrate Court, working within limited jurisdiction, takes small claims along with other civil disputes, including eviction and detinue matters.
| Court | Common civil work | Search or contact |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit Court | General civil cases, larger claims, equitable actions, and appeals | WVPASS and Logan County Circuit Clerk |
| Family Court | Domestic-relations cases | WVPASS where public; Logan County Circuit Clerk |
| Magistrate Court | Claims under $10,000, small claims, eviction, and detinue | MCRSearch and Logan Magistrate Court Clerk |
State public descriptions put Circuit civil cases at law over $7,500 and Magistrate civil disputes at $10,000 or less. The overlap comes from exceptions and changes in those summaries. On a borderline case, the filing clerk has the final word.
Civil Dockets: What They Show
Think of a Logan County civil docket as an index plus a timeline. The header can name the court, county, judge, case type, style, number, created date, status, security level, and related cases. Below that sits the entry list. It may show a complaint or petition, service, an answer, motions, orders, settings, judgment, dismissal, or appeal. Access to any field or document still turns on its security level. The law governing that case type matters too.
| Case number | The court identifier; copy the complete Logan number from the notice rather than guessing a local format. |
|---|---|
| Style and parties | The case caption and public party roles, which may include plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, or respondent. |
| Filings | The dated register of pleadings, motions, returns of service, orders, and other indexed papers. |
| Event schedule | Event type, date and time, room, location, judge, and closure reason when entered. |
| Disposition | The recorded judgment, dismissal, transfer, or other final action, subject to later entries or appeal. |
A docket entry confirms one thing: an event or paper was recorded. It may not show the whole document. Ask the clerk for the specific complaint, order, judgment, or certification instead of an undefined complete file.
Logan County Civil Docket Activity
The Judiciary's 2024 Lower Courts Annual Statistical Report lists 387 Logan Circuit civil cases across its published categories, separating general civil, adoption, guardianship, mental-health, and other work. That number measures annual activity only. It is not the count of cases open today, and it says nothing about the status of a named file.
Use the finalized annual reports for trend context. For a current Logan County civil docket, search the case itself or ask the clerk. The Judiciary's newer dashboard refreshes daily, but its figures carry a preliminary-data warning.
Note: A filing count measures court workload, not the merit, outcome, or current status of any civil claim.
What Cases Fill the Civil Docket
The Logan County civil docket holds several kinds of claims and proceedings. The court level matters. Circuit annual tables break out general civil, adoption, guardianship, and mental-health categories on their own lines. Family dockets cover domestic relations. Over in Magistrate civil dockets you can find small claims, commercial-credit matters, wrongful occupation, eviction, and recovery of personal property, called detinue.
- Contract, debt, property, tort, and other general civil claims
- Small claims and lower-value civil disputes in Magistrate Court
- Eviction, wrongful-occupation, and detinue actions
- Guardianship, adoption, and mental-health proceedings with special access rules
- Domestic-relations cases handled through Family Court
A form packet on the Circuit Clerk's site does not prove a filed case is open to unrestricted public review. The governing record rule controls that. Confirm the court level before searching, paying a filing fee, or requesting a copy.
Logan County Civil E-File Edges
Logan joined West Virginia Circuit/Family CourtPLUS E-File on June 1, 2019. The system lets attorneys, pro hac vice users, government offices, and approved staff create and manage digital filings. It is not the public name-search portal. Public searches belong in WVPASS. CourtPLUS does offer a reference-code tool for verifying an e-filed order. The official CourtPLUS information page explains the program's rules and requirements.

Paper still matters at the edges. Self-represented litigants file on paper with the Logan County Circuit Clerk, and sealed documents must be paper-filed. Vault stores scanned material, but digitization never makes a protected document public.
Hearings on the Civil Docket
A setting on a Logan County civil docket can identify an event type, date, time, room, location, and judge. It may be a motion hearing, status conference, bench trial, jury trial, or another step. Remember what an entry does not tell you. A filed motion does not itself establish that the court has granted relief. A date in the event history may have been continued or closed.
The clerk posts no separate public Logan daily civil calendar. Read the WVPASS or MCRSearch event schedule. Then confirm a time-sensitive setting with the court office. A continuance means the court moved an event, not that the case ended. Read scheduling orders and later docket entries together. The broader Logan County court schedule covers the available date-check routes.
- Setting
- A scheduled court event.
- Continuance
- An order moving the event to another time.
- Default judgment
- A judgment entered when the required response or appearance was not made, subject to court rules.
- Disposition
- The recorded result that closes or resolves a case or claim.
Logan County Civil Docket Costs
What does it cost to work with a Logan County civil docket? The Circuit Clerk's published fee schedule sets the numbers. A civil action runs $200 to file. A divorce or related matter costs $135. Ordinary clerk copies are $1 per page. Public downloads through WVPASS cost 25 cents per page plus card processing. Magistrate copies also run 25 cents per page under Administrative Rule 11. Keep filing costs and copy costs straight in your head. They are billed separately, and fees can change.
The local fee page appears below. It also links a financial-waiver packet and notes that approved waived costs are not collected.

Before you mail anything, call the clerk. Ask for a quote on the current total, the accepted payment method, and whether certification is available. Also confirm how the copies will be delivered. The clerk's office handles Logan-specific requests by phone or mail rather than a posted certified-copy form or standard cover sheet.

| Divorce, annulment, or separate-maintenance filing | $135 |
| Circuit Clerk ordinary copy | $1 per page |

Who Can See Civil Dockets
West Virginia presumes that clerk-held court records are open to inspection. Statutes carve out exceptions, though. So a Logan County civil docket entry can sit in public view. The document behind it may still stay confidential. That split matters most in domestic-relations, adoption, mental-health, guardianship, juvenile, and sealed cases.
Access boundaries:
West Virginia Code §51-4-2 opens court records to inspection and copies unless a special restriction applies.
West Virginia Code §48-1-303 makes domestic-relations orders public while keeping pleadings, exhibits, and other non-order documents confidential.
West Virginia Code §29B-1-4 lists public-record exemptions, including protection against an unreasonable invasion of privacy.
A clerk form, a docket number, or a public order does not unlock the whole file. Ask the office holding the record exactly which portion is public. Then verify any restriction with the court that keeps the original Logan County civil docket.
